Faith Lane is looking for dedicated volunteers with lived experience to join our team as co-facilitators and support volunteers. Faith Lane is a dedicated space within My Community designed for Christians living with HIV to find support, connection and purpose. Its where spirituality meets solidarity-a home for Joy, Justice and Journey

Joy-monthly online social events linked to key dates in the Christian calendar to build community connections and sense of belonging

Journey-six-week (one hour per week, online) peer support group to address internalised stigma, build self-worth, self-esteem, and self-acceptance.

Justice-a monthly space to learn about community advocacy, Can’t Pass it On message and sharing lived experience through story telling

What is My Community?

My Community is a free online space for people living with HIV to feel supported, connect, share experiences, seek advice, find reliable information and get involved.

  • Members can share personal experiences of living with HIV. This ranges from worries and concerns to celebrating successes and advances.
  • Members can ask questions and seek advice from peers about living with HIV.
  • The forum offers peer support and community, helping individuals feel less alone.
  • It serves as a resource for reliable information about HIV including diagnosis, treatments and managing multiple health conditions.
  • Members can promote and sign up to events and opportunities across the UK.

If you are compassionate, faith driven and would like to offer spiritual encouragement and would be confident to offer or be trained in this role, we would welcome your interest.

Tasks;

  • Volunteer/Moderator should be willing to co-facilitate and co-host virtual sessions aligned with Faith Lane`s Journey, Joy or Justice tracks.
  • To maintain a nurturing digital environment that supports open dialogue, spiritual encouragement and mutual respect, and be able to provide spiritual, emotional support,  to actively engaging in discussions and activities.
  • Be confident in assisting in the development and delivery of culturally sensitive content
  • Successful volunteers will be expected to capture feedback from participants to enhance ongoing community development
  • Be confident in collaborating with the wider Faith Lane team to continuously improve and innovate services

Online Work and Skills Employment Mentor

Work and Skills in an online personal development programme aimed at providing people living with HIV who are unemployed or in unsuitable work with online peer support, online work ready workshops and online 1-2-1 employment mentoring.

The online employment mentor is an integral part of the support structure for each individual, providing space for the participant to ask questions, set goals and plan how to achieve them, explore work and volunteering ideas, reflect on their skills and gain feedback on job/volunteering applications and interview technique.

Volunteer Role Description

Counsellor - Brighton

 

Terrence Higgins Trust is committed to achieving a good volunteering experience for all of our volunteers.  We believe in equal opportunities and welcome applications to volunteer from all.  We particularly welcome applications from our service users and those who have benefited from our services.  Where Criminal Disclosures are required we will review all cases on an individual basis and a criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to volunteering with us.


Introduction to role:

The counselling team are looking for a qualified counsellor to provide short term counselling support to people living with HIV or affected by HIV.

 

The type of tasks/activities you could be involved with:

  • To assess clients’ suitability for counselling (when applicable)
  • To provide short term counselling sessions (up to 12 sessions per person)
  • To maintain clients’ files and ensure collection of appropriate information from clients
  • To attend counselling supervision (individual and group) as agreed
  • To work collaboratively with the senior counsellor, volunteer counsellors and with other Terrence Higgins Trust staff & volunteers as appropriate

 

Desirable skills/experience sought:

  • Qualified counsellor (can be working towards BACP accreditation or equivalent professional qualification)
  • Having provided a  minimum of 120 supervised counselling hours
  • Relevant counselling experience within a related field
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary agency
  • A good understanding of issues relating to HIV and the treatment of HIV
  • Experience of maintaining a varied caseload
  • Ability to deliver service in a non-judgemental and non-discriminatory manner
  • Commitment to personal and professional development
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Commitment to representing THT in a positive & constructive way.
  • Experience providing counselling online and/or over the phone
  • We currently deliver face to face sessions during working hours from our offices in Ship Street and zoom (or equivalent) sessions at several times throughout the week. Please feel free to contact us to discuss this as this might be changing.

Desired commitment:        

  • Flexible – up to three clients a week at agreed times
  • We hope volunteers will stay for 6+ months to get the most out of the role
  • Times to be scheduled to fit in with counselling room availability if needed

 

Geographical area: 61 Ship Street, Brighton, BN1 1AE (online counselling currently being provided)

When required: As soon as available.

 

Training & support:  Online induction and data protection training plus, HIV awareness and safeguarding webinars, one-to-one support provided

Must be over 18

 

Selection process: Online application, DSE assessment, reference, training, interview.

Core activities, all volunteers will be expected to:

  • Promote and adhere to Terrence Higgins Trust’s equal opportunities policy, confidentiality policy and volunteer code of conduct
  • Promote and maintain health and safety regulations, practices and conditions
  • Be responsible in volunteering activities with due regard to the security of the building and its contents and the charity’s resources
  • Complete all necessary paperwork and provide basic monitoring data as required
  • Take part in group support sessions and supervision as required for the role
  • Attend meetings, conferences and undertake training as appropriate

Volunteer Welfare Rights Adviser

Join Us as a Welfare Rights Volunteer - Brighton

Are you passionate about social justice, advocacy and supporting people living with HIV? We're looking for dedicated volunteers to join our Welfare Rights Coordinator at the Brighton office of Terrence Higgins Trust.

What you'll do:

  • Help clients navigate the benefits system
  • Support with form-filling and appeals (PIP, ESA,UC)
  • Advocate with GPs and professionals for supporting evidence
  • Keep accurate, confidential records
  • General administration for the Living Well team
  • Be a vital part of a compassionate, knowledgeable team
